Local SEO for dentists: what actually moves the needle
Five local ranking factors that consistently move dental practices up the map pack, from someone who works on them every day. No fluff, just the levers.
Every dental practice wants to rank in the map pack. Most are told to “optimise their Google Business Profile” and left to guess what that means. Here is what actually moves the needle, based on day-to-day work across a portfolio of UK practices.
1. Primary category beats almost everything
Your primary GBP category is the single strongest signal you control. “Dentist” versus “Dental clinic” versus “Cosmetic dentist” produces measurably different rankings for different queries. Pick the category that matches the searches you want, not the one that sounds most impressive.
2. Reviews: velocity and replies, not just totals
A practice with 80 reviews growing by 6 a month will usually outperform one sitting on 200 old ones. Reply to every review, positive or negative. Replies are content, and Google reads them.
3. Services and treatments filled in properly
The services section of your profile is not decoration. Practices that list treatments with descriptions consistently show for more queries than practices that leave it thin.
4. Location pages that are actually about the location
A page titled “Dentist in [Town]” that only swaps the town name is not a location page, it is a template. Proximity references, local landmarks, directions, parking and the team who work at that practice make the difference.
5. Posts that survive the health content policy
Healthcare profiles live under stricter content policies than most businesses realise. Posts get silently rejected for wording that would be fine in any other industry. Write clean, factual posts and check they actually published.
None of this is glamorous. All of it is measurable. That is rather the point.
